    Plato’s “Apology of Socrates,” an Interpretation, with a New Translation. [REVIEW]D. W. J. - 1980 - Review of Metaphysics 33 (4):809-811.
West takes issue with the traditional interpretation of the Apology, according to which Socrates’ conviction on charges of impiety and corruption of the young was unjust, the manner of his defense noble and beautiful, his rhetorical manner a model of straightforward simplicity and truth. West’s account bears an affinity to a more recent interpretation which holds that the politically reactionary Socrates was justly condemned for being out of tune with the progressive Athenian democracy. Yet this agreement is a superficial one. (...)

    A Study of Nietzsche. [REVIEW]D. W. J. - 1980 - Review of Metaphysics 34 (1):166-168.
Lively and well written, this account comes closest to Nietzsche in its prose, which occasionally approaches the compact yet lingering suggestions of Nietzsche’s own aphoristic style.

    Nietzsche’s Existential Imperative. [REVIEW]D. W. J. - 1979 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (3):560-561.
An interesting, important, and well-written interpretation of Nietzsche’s doctrine of eternal recurrence. The first chapter, in addition to providing a useful summary of Nietzsche’s philosophy under the topics of nihilism, morality, Christianity, will-to-power, the Ubermensch, [[sic]] and eternal recurrence, emphasizes Nietzsche’s understanding of the crisis of Western civilization. The root of that crisis is nihilism, itself a product of Western civilization, or more specifically, of Platonism and Christianity. Plato’s rejection of the phenomenal or sensory world in the name of the (...)

College students judged dog or cat misbehavior via questionnaire items. Common factor analysis yielded 3 dimensions of student response: the sinner ; the sin ; and mercy . Correlations among sinner, sin, and mercy factor scores supported predictions from causal attribution theory. Nevertheless, cross-tabulation analysis revealed that nearly 90% of all respondents endorsed mercy , regardless of the extent to which the animals were seen as sinners , or evaluations of the level of sin . Absolutely high average mercy scores (...)

Indestructible Weakly Compact Cardinals and the Necessity of Supercompactness for Certain Proof Schemata.J. D. Hamkins & A. W. Apter - 2001 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 47 (4):563-572.
We show that if the weak compactness of a cardinal is made indestructible by means of any preparatory forcing of a certain general type, including any forcing naively resembling the Laver preparation, then the cardinal was originally supercompact. We then apply this theorem to show that the hypothesis of supercompactness is necessary for certain proof schemata.

  37. The comparative psychology of uncertainty monitoring and metacognition.J. Smith, W. Shields & D. Washburn - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (3):317-339.
Researchers have begun to explore animals' capacities for uncertainty monitoring and metacognition. This exploration could extend the study of animal self-awareness and establish the relationship of self-awareness to other-awareness. It could sharpen descriptions of metacognition in the human literature and suggest the earliest roots of metacognition in human development. We summarize research on uncertainty monitoring by humans, monkeys, and a dolphin within perceptual and metamemory tasks. We extend phylogenetically the search for metacognitive capacities by considering studies that have tested less (...)

    Werke. Kritische Gesamtausgabe. [REVIEW]J. D. W. - 1980 - Review of Metaphysics 34 (2):392-393.
Nietzsche scholarship has always been dependent on incomplete editions. Nietzsche wrote much more than he published, and his literary remains were left to posterity in disarray—and in a handwriting few people could decipher. The exploitations perpetrated by his sister added to the tangled situation, as did the rude interruption by World War II of an attempt to publish a definitive edition.
